Although my skin may seem under control now, that was not always the case. Like many adolescents, my acne started just as I approached 14 years old. Oh what fun hormones are, right? Then became the tumultuous back and forth visits to the dermatologist. I would walk in, they would prescribe yet another topical cream and I would be on my way. It’s important to note that I dealt with consistent comedonal and cystic acne (lucky me, right?!) so what worked for me may not work for everyone! It’s important to explore all options with your dermatologist.

I would go through cycles of acne targeted laser treatments, monthly facials, and prescription oral antibiotics – which had aggravated the natural flora in my gut microbiome – all of which were not the answer. Ultimately, what worked for me was starting on the birth control pill. Although it took years of trial and error to find the right pill I can confidently say that my acne has dramatically cleared. I have also been refining my skin care routine for so long that I know exactly what it needs and treat it accordingly. I also must note that this time in quarantine has allowed me to focus my energy inwards and notice what serves me and what doesn’t. Stress has more of an effect on your acne than you think!

Surely we know that acne isn’t just caused by hormonal imbalances. It can also be due to the products we use, environment, stress, and foods we eat. I have been extra observant of the foods I eat, especially concerning dairy and processed sugar – both of which are inflammatory foods that can trigger acne. I have not completely eliminated these foods but I have definitely noticed a shift in my overall energy and an improvement in my skin when I limit my consumption.

With all of that being said, I still experience breakouts like everyone else but have really leaned into being comfortable in my own skin. Throughout high school and college, I would walk with my head down hoping no one would notice the huge pimple on my chin only to poke and prod at it once I was alone (which by the way is one of the worst things you can do when experiencing a break out).
Honestly, the main reason for creating this post is to express that I understand the debilitating toll that acne can take on a person because I’ve lived it. It’s so easy to compare yourself to other people, especially with all of these social platforms showcasing “perfect” men and women aka facetuned and photoshopped bodies and silky smooth skin. I’m here to say that is NOT realistic. Acne is a natural part of life that is nothing to be ashamed about, and with the right treatment plan it can be manageable. Hopefully this platform will not only allow you to discover new and effective products for you to use, but to encourage you to feel confident in yourself and with your acne. No longer should there be a space for acne shaming, because ultimately your beauty radiates from the inside, out.
